Oma Maa Jäsenkirje 12/2018 : At the end of a beautiful Oma Maa year : up with ecology and democracy (and all the possibilities Oma Maa offers)!

Hi dear all,

December greetings!

This Newsletter is written during a time in which many fold environmental and societal concerns are speaking up. Quite often the discussion is being framed as being between consumer choice and big policies, and it is pointed to the fact that it is the latter that truly matters. There is another way to look at this which entails an acknowledgement of the need to work towards a profound democratisation, implying (cultural) change in the way we lead our daily lives, which will have to become a backbone of the answer. And in this context, and we talked about this also during our wonderful membership dinner at the end of November (see more below), it is truly enthusing that our coop Oma Maa as a whole offers/can come to offer, different bridges for us, possibilities, to be changing some of the immediate around us, as in/extensive as basically we ourselves want to engage in.

Our November bags continued to see Oma Maa carrots, nauris, lanttu, and punajuuri in them (These previous newsletters will be informative for you who joined only recently).

In the greenhouse the growing of our new round of asian leaves, mangoldi, spinach and pak choi unfortunately got slowed down, as we remained struggling with mice and rats, but also with the heating which was not working properly – the oven broke and needed replacement of a part and repairing. Now the oven is repaired and we are as back on track as we can be with our new plants. This week our first Mangoldi which has had a bit a bumpy ride in these circumstances will not be handed to you in the foodbags, but in the planned pelmenit for the coming week foodbags!

In November, to name but a few things, we started making posts for the foodforest fence, cleaned and stored machinery for winter, fixed and sealed the greenhouse, and made firewood for the heating of the greenhouse. Also  there was the inventory of seeds, more penkkit prepared and planted, and some more lamps added.

In November we also addressed in a few steps where we are standing with our chickens, i.e. with our egg orders. Throughout the year the number of chickens on the farm goes through a cycle relating to Lassila farm also seeing a coming and going of summer chickens. We as Oma Maa coop then again have our own fluctuation in demand. Typically there is then more demand for eggs in the summer then in the winter and as such this flow needs to somehow be organically dealt with. Assessing the situation, we have now also taken up yet another possibility category in the pricing of our eggs. If someone has a foodbagg share, but not an egg share, one can order eggs with the same seasonal commitment as with the foodbags, at the price of 40 euro / 2 kennot per week (if the available amount of eggs allows this).

@the Farm

November started off with a great Kekri celebration – we worked together and took all our oma maa’s givings out of the ground! We prepared and ate a wonderful meal together still outside at the tables under the apple trees, watched the skies being lit up by a high kokko and had a sauna.

A last smaller but important mansikka weeding talkoot also still took place November (the more the beautiful our strawberries will be next year!) – and of course at the farm at large winter preparations came in full swing.

@the Kahvila, our second member dinner 23.11 <3

At the Kahvila then that same wonderfulness from the farm continued to the city during our second amazing jäsendinner, during which our cooks (and farmers) Jukka and Jan once again prepared a three-course menu entirely made out of ingredients from the farm.

During the eve we heard on how Oma Maa was doing, including besides on all the so much good what has happened this year also on our challenges – we remain having a real need to be higher the amount of bag orders – as also on the fantastic possibilities Oma Maa already does and can come to offer, as we started this newsletter off with.

And we heard from Jan and Jukka who took part from 9-11 November in the gathering of European Community-Supported Agriculture movements in Thessaloniki, Greece, for their 4th European Meeting. To name a few of the points that came up during their relating and the discussion that followed : Meetings like this serve to empower on a personal and movement building level, with both processes being important for our common objectives at large. And when comparing this meeting to the previous CSA meeting Oma Maa also participated in, one difference is how the Urgenci network is trying to gather more resources from its members to fund international co-action.

In line with also discussions in Oma Maa, the issue of packaging came up a lot in Greece, not only from the perspective of a critique of the use of plastic, but also from the perspective of how we as a coop should consider more the possibilities to do things, including packaging, really different from how they are done on the market – i.e. according to our own values and (informed) standards. This is a possible theme we could be exploring more together during our next membership & friends – dinner which is set for the beginning of February 2019! Last but not least, when looking at the CSA scene in Europe, Oma Maa without a doubt belongs to the most elaborate and further going proposals in terms of the systemic change it seeks and the commitment it thus demands, thumbs up were given for this also in Greece!:)

We are thanking everyone who was with this eve, they were beautiful and mutually strengthening, and as announced then, the contributions given for the dinner will be supporting the making of a traditional fence around the edible forest.

Still about our already much applauded dinners @Kaarlenkatu, the idea is next year to continue with our membership dinners at least once a month. In addition, Oma Maa@Kaarlenaktu 15 will be opening up for public pre-reserved dinners.

Towards a New Year ..!

For the December month we are now at 51 bag orders, and are again happy with a few more people who have joined as full coop members, as well as with the eight new (try-out) members that responded to the possibility to receive an Oma Maa Joulukassi special – Welcome! And we on the farm are excited about the bag content we are currently preparing for you in the two still upcoming bag weeks (whilst reminding that next week (week 50) is a normal pick up week, whereas the week after that (week 51) it will be so that everyone will be picking up a bag either on Tuesday or Thursday, as we will have no bags made in the last week of the year). Welcome that week to stay on a bit during satojako for some Oma Maa Glöggi!

Week 52 (2018) and Week 1 (2019) gives then time for all of us to be able to take a break, reflect and not in the least also develop thoughts also on paper for different other activities ‘beyond’ food we want to develop as a coop.

As you will have noted, we have opened the orders for the winterbags!, which will be smaller and consist mostly of processed and dry products, and thus cost less (120 euros a month). As we wrote already in the previous newsletter, aim is to develop the processed products so new products are to be expected in addition to the familiar falafels, seitan and yoghurt. There will also be greenhouse greens in the bag and our collected berries are in the freezer to be shared, as well as to make ready products from. In addition we will be experimenting with the cultivation of mushrooms (oyster mushrooms).

So, another repeat:), a lot of development of our foodbags will be upcoming this winter and made possible by your ordering of the bag!

Oma Maa Jäsenkirje 11/2018 : traditional and future food Oma Maa treats for Xmas!

November greetings!

Our October farming brought a rainbow in our foodbags

These previous newsletters will be informative for you who joined only recently.

October brought an abundant month of Oma Maa carrots, nauris, lanttu, and punajuuri –  some roots very huge, but also many tasty baby roots, and with it – as our farmer Joel Bird put it – a rainbow in our foodbags.

In the greenhouse our cucumber and tomato season came for a moment to an end, whilst a lot of planting started up again: asian leaves, mangoldi, spinach, pak choi etc. upcoming in our bags very soon! At the same time we had some drawback in the greenhouse caused by among other things mice eating our produce. We are actively doing our best to control such factors and get our new plants doing well!

New in the bags were hemp seeds from our second farm in the coop, Kaukon tila. And as mentioned also further on in this newsletter,  some first hemp products were experimented with during our October dinner.

In the October bags, we also had a nice combination of local products, local methods but global tastes Oma Maa wants to experiment further in, as our bags had seitan tortilla and an excellent much complimented Salsa Verde from our own tomatillos.

@the Farm

Some 30 people participated in October on a beautiful autumn-ish weekend during the Sadonkorjuutalkoot ja ruokametsäkävely”. The turnout was wonderful, to show and share on all the doings with our members and to collectively also get a good amount of work done! Everyone was commenting how such a day can make such a difference in getting the things done. All our hands put together make the load light!

@the Kahvila – Next Dinner 23.11., do sign up now!

We had a fantastic dinner on 26.11. at the Kahvila on Kaarlenkatu. Our cooks (and farmers) Jukka and Jan prepared a three-course menu entirely made out of ingredients from the farm, which included this time among others a new experimentation with the making of Hemptofu. The goal for this dinner, in addition to an enjoyable evening, was to gain practice for everyone and to get feedback about the food and the overall experience. Following the delicious meal, we had a good round of discussions about our coop, see this little note on the things we will be collectively taking forward.

And a next dinner is already set for 23.11., under the theme of Oma Maa as a part of international (food and land) movements. It is great that our farmers Jan and Jukka are taking part on 9-11 November 2018 in the gathering of European Community-Supported Agriculture movements in Thessaloniki, Greece, for their 4th European Meeting – and will be telling more on this over dessert on 23.11. – do sign up to jasenet@omamaa.fi!

More Coop members & December’s Oma Maa Xmas (try-out) bag!

For the November month we are now at 55 bag orders, and whilst this means we are at a bit less bag order, we are very happy a few people have joined as full coop members, as well as that four new try-out members joined us for November, welcome!

In December our foodbags will see Oma Maa end of the year season treats, both traditional as well as foods of the future! This is how Oma Maa is wanting to develop its food: locally grown ingredients, traditional methods, yet also this combined with global practices and tastes. As December marks also the end of our summer season bags, we decided to now offer a one month whole bag try-out period for December, meaning three larger than normal bags (due to the last week and beginning of next year’s week being a break in production). Do spread this word to friends and acquaintances, that there is this possibility to bring ethical food products to all of our xmas and end of the Season celebration tables! Ordering happens via this form! (and if you are already getting your bag, you of course don’t need to do anything)

As already notified of, we will commence with our winterbag season in week 2 of 2019.

We requested your comments on the “Summer-winter season switch and 2019 bag ordering arrangements”, and we got a few replies from you writing that the arrangements seem good! (See our e-mail to you on 30.10.2018) So we will be proceeding as such.

We will soon be opening the orders for the winterbags, which will be smaller and consist mostly of processed and dry products, and thus cost less (120 euros a month). As we wrote also in the email, the aim is, however, to develop the processed products so new products are to be expected in addition to the familiar falafels, seitan and yoghurt. There will also be greenhouse greens in the bag and our collected berries are in the freezer to be shared, as well as to make ready products from. In addition we will be experimenting with the cultivation of mushrooms (oyster mushrooms).

So a lot of development of our foodbags will be upcoming this winter and made possible by your ordering of the bag!

On our French bush beans delight, fall event dates and important upcoming Winterseason info! Huom!

***The whole newsletter in Finnish below***

Hi dear all,

October greetings!

About our September farming

Our farming in September was of course a continuation of our farming in previous months. These July, August and September newsletters will be informative for you who joined only recently.

This newsletter is being sent out as another IPCC climate change report has hit the headlines. Our Omppu Tonttu tila comrades in Lahti put it like this : “if you want to mitigate climate change fast and easy: eat organic. If our cultivated lands would be average organic fields, the effect would be about 3500kg/ha/year CO2 binding capacity. If our cultivated lands on the other hand are using chemical fertilizer, industrial products, they would be releasing about 1000kg/ha/vuosi CO2. The positive effect of organic farming is then about 4500kg CO2/ha/year. Every year!” Take that..

The kohtuusliike (finnish movement for “life in moderation”)  came out with these very nice 10 climate demands, several of them relating to agriculture, the possibility for people to shift away from detrimental jobs as offered by a basic income, and this shifting away then linked to the objective of self sufficiency.

As such the debate around also the relevance of Oma Maa’s raison d’etre continues in public.

On a yet closer to our grounds level 🙂 we have been asked to be more specific also regarding that what fared less well this summer season. The previous newsletters have already been referring to this, but different non-succeedings are to be attributed to on the one hand the heat and drought this summer season. So for instance our onions, garlic, härkäpapu, broccoli, cabbage, red cabbage, zucchini, basil, water melon suffered.

On the other hand, and for sure exacerbating the weather factor, has been the fact that quite a lot of our attention and energy went this year, for a considerable part, to the building up of (the functioning and capacities of) a new team on the farm, the first year start up of the kasvihuone (and a lot of learning has been done regarding also what to do differently inside our greenhouse for next year), and the efforts around our edible forest.

With regards to the outside planting then, what then eventually succeeded well, like our french bush bean season, was mainly due to a second round of planting.

… fresh broad beans sweets in our food bags

The above notwithstanding, in September our bags only got fuller and heavier. As someone counted it up one bagday, our foodbags were starting to weigh some 8kgs! We had a good quantity of French bush beans in our food bags, as also of broad beans from our cooperative partner, Kaukon tila, which freshly cooked, tasted simply like sweet. In our bags also sweet chocolate pepper and apple juice! As well as those very tasty and prize winning Colomba potatoes.

At the moment we are planting every week in the greenhouse – asian leaves, mangoldi, spinach, pak choi etc. upcoming! From the land, we are still awaiting beetroot and carrot, but also parsnip and piparjuuri and of course more lanttu and nauris.

@the farm In the beginning of September we had a recycling and handcraft event  – a very well visited and warm going about on the farm! With basically all the prepared for the occasion Oma Maa bread and falafel sold out.

& off the farm On the second week of September we had a cafe in the intermission of the Rakkaudesta performance in Cirko in Helsinki. Food members prepared and served small pastries, berry juice and infusion from seasonal ingredients from the farm and spread the word about our coop.

(Very) Slowly, but surely, more cooperative members

For the October month we have stayed at around the same amount of bag orders, 61 bag orders, with two new cooperative members having joined and 12 new try out members (Tervetuloa!). As has then been the case also in previous months – anyone wanting to be signing up for the foodbags continues to be welcome! (try-out membership continues in December and January – see below!)

Into the Winter season – Attention / Huom!

November has been marked as the end of our summerbag season. During a recent meeting on the farm with farmers and board members we discussed the timetables on and off the farm including farmer holidays, as well as the calendar of our foodbag seasons. The following was concluded:

We will be EXTENDING our summerbag season up and until thursday 20.12.2018.

Whole bag orders will be receiving extra items in their bag to making up for the last week of the year (and our aim is to do this in the form of some christmas Oma Maa treats).

Half bag orders who would have had a bag in the last week of December, will be requested to pick up their bag one week earlier – and we will of course check for the content of the bags keeping in mind we are speeding up your pick up rhythm.

So in summary, no bags on Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th but everyone will have a bag to pick up on week 51 (Tuesday 18th / Thursday 20th).

If you are NOT be wanting to receive your bag in December, LET THIS KNOW BY 1.11.2018 (write to jasenet@omamaa.fi)

October-November try out members’ order will automatically end by the end of November but you can join the coop starting from December and order the December bag as a member.

Following the ending of the summer bag season, there will be a two weeks production break for the last week of December and first week of January.

We will commence with our winterbag season in week 2 of 2019. Our winterbags will be smaller, and thus cost less (120 euros a month). As there are five weeks in January, we are at the moment thinking that neither whole nor half bag orders need any compensative measures – both groups, even and uneven weeks, will get 4 or 2 pick up days. But this is something we can still get back to later, if this feels to be necessary. Pending the total amount of orders, there will be one or two pick up days in the winter season.

As such we will still continue having try out periods for the two months periods throughout the winter, adapting pick up days offers for the December and January month.

We will then be putting out soon a questionnaire as to when everyone thinks the winter season should be ending, and when the beginning of the summer season 2019 should start. But perhaps more relevant, and as a part of the questionnaire, we will also be asking your opinion on some options we thought of. So we for instance discussed the offering of a month’s break in an ongoing bagorder, for which we would charge a small fee (like 20 euro) related to the fact that we should then be finding additional try out members to fill the gap in income and to the fact that we are then nevertheless working for the products to be coming up in the bags following the break (the production in the co-op requires constant income even if breaks are taken). Another option we have thought of is to facilitate a simple system allowing you to be gifting your bag during a month (or half a month) to a friend or perhaps to a good cause. So the exact ending of our upcoming winter season and start of next year’s summer season is something we will still be discussing collectively.

Different upcoming dates!

Further organising and deepening our Coop – over a delicious Oma Maa dinner!

On Friday 26.10.2018 our farmers and cooks Jan and Jukka will be cooking a dinner for us – with the aim to both practice the taking up of the making of dinners in the cafe again, as well as to give us the great opportunity to deepen the discussions around the development of our coop over a fantastic dinner. We will not be asking for a fixed price for the dinners, but probably make a suggestion concerning a collection pot present. So we will be leaving it up to you with how much you would like to contribute for this cooperative dinner.

We will soon be coming back as to what the discussion around our coop will be concentrating on for that evening (we are planning at least two of these evenings), but you can already Sign up now! (send a message with how many people you will be attending the dinner to jasenet@omamaa.fi)

Talkoot and Kekrijuhla!

During October we are going to have two talkoot-events:

13 October: Talkoot with breakfast and guided tour at the farm. If you’ve never visited the Lassila farm or otherwise are curious, this is your opportunity! Before talkoot we will make a short guided tour at the farm and take a walk in our food forest. Please check the event on Facebook for its agenda and other details.

27 October: Talkoot with breakfast. If you want to start a new day with co-op members you’re welcome to join for the breakfast! You can also join just the talkoot. Please check the event on Facebook for its agenda and other details.

Please dress according to the weather. Rubber boots are highly recommended, and in case of the rain we recommend a raincoat.

If you are coming to the talkoot by car and can take people with you please let us know in the talkootyö-form (link in the email version of this letter)!

Kekrijuhla/Harvest feast 3.11!  More info still following! – but we will be having our traditional Harvest feast marking the beginning of winter on Saturday 3.11.

And in addition to the above – Welcome to join for talkoot during any weekday at the farm or any pick-up day at the cafe!

You can sign up to work at the farm or in the cafe on pick-up days as well as offer or find a ride to and from the farm via the talkoot form (link in the email version of this letter).

SUOMEKSI:

Lokakuiset terveiset kaikille,

Tervetuloa! Kuten aiempinakin kuukausina, tarvitsemme lisää tilaajia ja toivotamme kaikki kiinnostuneet tervetulleiksi ja täyttämään tilauslomakkeen! (myös 2kk kokeilumahdollisuus jatkuu edelleen, kuten aiemmin, mistä lisää alla)

Kohti talvikautta – Huom!

Marraskuu on merkitty kesäkautemme viimeiseksi kuukaudeksi.

to 20.12.).

Talvikausi alkaa vuoden 2019 viikolla 2. Aiempien vuosien tapaan talvikassimme tulevat olemaan pienempiä ja siten halvempia (120 e / kk). Tammikuussa on viisi viikkoa, joten tällä hetkellä ajatuksena on, ettei ensimmäisen viikon viljelijöiden loma vaikuta muihin viikkoihin.

Kahden kuukauden kokeilumahdollisuutta tulemme jatkamaan läpi talven.

Lokakuussa meillä tulee olemaan tilalla kahdet talkoot:

Black (berry) pearls and the deepening of the workings of our Coop

Hi dear all,

September greetings!

About our August farming
Also August brought sunny and warm days, with the publicly expressed concerns on climate change continuing. Farmers too were on the brink, as this letter of a Dutch farmer was testimony to, urging his colleagues to go organic and sustainable in the face of climate threats. As our farmer Jan Veltman put it well, ”Interesting letter by the owner of a food-forest in the Netherlands! It’s meant for farmers, but we can also help by choosing where we buy our food!”. For more on the latter, see this nice 5 min video The Future of Food which puts further to the forefront what a beautiful thing we have in our hands with Oma Maa.

… continuing with beautiful black berry pearls in our food bags
August brought us different shades of reds and greens with from the greenhouse our tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, mangoldi, portulakka, chillies and from our open fields french bush beans, sweet peas, turnips, swedes and garlic. As those of you who are longer with know, this has been our coop’s first greenhouse year – as such good learning is continuously accompanying our walking, and will be taken with into the next season! An abundance of black currants stayed with us, as well as of potatoes from both of our coop’s farms Kaukon tila as also from Lassilan tila. And at the very end of the month a new beauty was to be found in our bags, namely tomatillo’s, and with this our possibilities to make a great salsa were completed:)
.
With this of course also the good work continued. Much of the work mentioned in our August newsletter continued, but to mention a few particulars of time consuming activities we did during September on the farm : all the garlic was removed from the ground, all cherries picked, and all of the hay was collected from the land.

More @the farm
It is great that also in August members joined to work on the farm also during foodbagg production hours. And this is something we want to continue to promote. Besides talkoot which will be called for separately, everyone remains most welcome to join during the week to get to know better all the work on the farm. Additional hands are of great value on the farm, whilst for you it gives yet a double deeper meaning to the “know where your food comes from”:)

(Very) Slowly, but surely, more food bagg orders
This September month we have come to 62 full bag orders, 42 whole bag orders and 40 half bag orders. Ten new try out members joined us in September (Tervetuloa!). With our egg orders remaining pretty much full for the moment.

And as such we continue to welcome more people to join us! 🙂 which remains a necessity for our coop to come to a sustainability level to be able to continue its operations. In terms of our season, our current “summer season” continues till November, and as such anyone signing up for the foodbags continues to be welcome! We are still fine tuning our plans with regards to what follows after November, i.e. how we continue into the winterbag season. But we will share this with you as soon as we have full clarity!

Further organising and deepening our Coop (also over dinner!)
At the very end of the month also, we had a good open board meeting which in particular addressed the further organising of activities in our coop. Please still find the notes here.

During the meeting the following groups were established :

1.Kurssit: Yhteyshenkilö Sami Keto
Oma Maa jakaa ruokaa, mutta voisi jakaa myös taitoja! Tavoitteena onkin vakiinnuttaa kurssien järjestäminen keskeiseksi osaksi toimintaamme – ja tuoda samalla lisätuloja osuuskunnalle. Kursseja voi olla monenlaisia, yhdistävinä teemoina kuitenkin omavaraisuus ja kumppannuusmaatalous. Syksyksi on kaavailtu ainakin mm.

Kiinnostuneet, ottakaa yhteyttä Outiin: outi.silfverberg@gmail.com.

Besides activating these working groups, our aim is also to organise a few memberdinners at our kahvila in October, during which besides having a wonderful exquisite dinner together, we will also take the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what our Coop is and can be. More on this asap!

Welcome to join for talkoot during any week day at the farm!

You can sign up, offer or find a ride via the following talkoot form (link to that in the email version of this newsletter).
Read also again the complete overview of our talkoot workings.

We will also be having our next Open board meeting Tuesday 18.9, klo19 @Oma Maa kahvila, Kaarlenkatu 15. Welcome there too!

Till soon at one of these occasions,

Ulla & Ruby

On our reds and greens, events@the farm and a question

Hi dear all,

August greetings!

About our farming: also a warm, sunny and dry July

As we all have been standing still at, in July the warm and sunny days continued. And manyfold have been the writings and conversations around us with concerns regarding the significance of these high temperatures, of climate change. And whilst in itself this weather of course also impacts the workings of our cooperative, and gives food for thought regarding directions to take for us, we also stand firm amidst the increasing recognition of the fact that it is sustainable organic small scale cooperative production, which in many ways is not only a strategical element of adaptation, but also of mitigation when speaking of climate change.

… with nevertheless beautiful reds and greens continuing in our food bags

The beautiful strawberry red continued in our bags during July, and we spent a good number of days on the fields together during the weekends, but also during foodbaggs days. Red also coming from our very first tomatoes in the foodbaggs in July! As well as from our radishes and cherries. At some point the strawberry delight ended, but only to give way for black currants, as well as potatoes from our very same and beautiful Oma Maa cooperative member Kaukon tila. More greens in turn in our baggs came from our first cucumbers! from our broad beans, as well as from our peas.

Good work has accompanied the (forthcoming) harvests. So the fields of the radishes, carrots and other root vegetables have been weeded, more salad has been planted, and most of the berries have been cleared in the food forest – surprisingly and wonderfully most of them seem to have been surviving in spite of the heat!

More @the farm

On the farm we appreciated to have members with us also during the intensive foodbagg production hours. And at large thoughts have been more developing as to how to have/enable more people engaged on the farm in meaningful and enjoyable activities. A second yoga and brunch was successfully held beginning July, with close to 30 people enjoying the session in a beautiful morning sun on the fields, as birds flew over. The brunch was also very appreciated, and brought up requests to cooking classes on the farm! We will be developing the upcoming ideas further, and as you can see from the below little calendar, for September a Kierrätettyä ja käsintehtyä Lassilan luomutilalla event will take place.

And more food bagg orders

This August month we then come to 60 full bag orders, which in practice means 40 whole baggs, and 40 half baggs. Nineteen new try-out members joined for august-september month, and ordered 6 whole and 13 half bags. Our egg orders are pretty much full for the moment.

As glad as we are with each and everyone of those orders, we are hoping to come to some 80-100 foodbag orders – this will be necessary for our coop to come to a sustainability level to be able to continue its operations. Signing up for the foodbags continues to be possible:)

Can you change your Tuesday pick up day to Thursday?

Last but not least still the following question : who of you Tuesday people (i.e. you who are currently picking up your foodbag on Tuesdays), would be willing, or perhaps even be glad, to change your pick up day to Thursday?! We are asking this, as there is currently a big difference in the number of bags to be produced for Tuesday compared to Thursday, with food bags produced on Tuesday almost reaching 40. The issue is that if we get above 40 bags for a certain day, we need to turn for instance the oven twice for one bread kind, which of course has its impact on our timetable etc. Therefore, as long as we are below 80 orders, it would be better if we can more evenly distribute the orders for Tuesday and Thursday. Should it be possible for you to switch, do send Ruby a message at jasenet@omamaa.fi! Thanking!

Summer greetings! on our edible forest, peltojooga, strawberries and diversity

Hi dear all,

July rainy summer greetings to all of you! not in the least also to you who have joined us now this month!

About our farming: warm, sunny and dry June

It was a very warm and sunny June month also on the farm, during which we concentrated on different things. We continued the development of the greenhouse and as such continued to have greens in the bags including our first beans! Our tomatoes and cucumbers are now growing strong there. We also spent time on our food forest clearing the area out; planted a lot of berry bushes, trimmed fruit trees, and of course spent efforts on watering the area. We also planted on the fields – carrots, mangoldi, a variety of beans, potatoes, onions, summer squash – and are keeping fingers crossed the rains have been coming in time for them to grow! As you will all have heard about, the past warm weather conditions have been presenting challenges for all farmers in Finland. In general, our avomaatuotanto will now be coming out a bit later this year, as we focused our spring energy to our very first greenhouse season, and our edible forest – both of course two fantastic things to have enjoyed and cared for! Do read also the profile of farmer Jan, one of our makers and care-takers.

We had to deal with an electricity cut during one of the bag days. This made us for a first time postpone our bagg day to the next day as we did not want to do away with all the prepared dough for the bread and beans for the hummus. But as the electricity only returned later on that postponed bag day, it was not possibly for us to make the bread and humus, and we ended up loosing what was prepared anyway. It is in moments like this, that looking at things from a long term perspective are important.

Because, we have been seeing the bountiful side as well!

Sharing the bountiful : Peltojooga and Strawberries!

So we celebrated a few new developments last month : We had our first well participated field yoga & brunch session! which has already been coined by a journalist as being an “innovation in agriculture”:) and we of course can’t do anything else but agree with the journalist that this is indeed a positive thing. A second peltojooga session upcoming 8.7! (see below)

Also, cooperation was renewed with one of Oma Maa coop’s founding members Eero Mattila of Kaukon tila, and in this manner we were firstly able to enjoy blackberries from the freezer, but then also a good amount of this years beautiful strawberries in our foodbags (of the Polka, Bounty and Jansok varieties). In addition, a number of you already came to the farm and picked strawberries according to the favourable conditions our coop was able to offer (8 € / kg if you pick just for yourself, or you pick on the principle of 50 % for the coop, 50 % for you). This offer still continues! as long as the strawberry fields provide, and is offered to all members, current try-out members and satojakokaverit, but not to other kaverit :). Needless to say we are also hoping this sharing of abundance is motivating our (try-out) members to renew or continue their enjoying of and commitment to our cooperative process! We can not stress too much, that our coop’s food bags are to be seen as a developmental process in itself, along with the overall development of the cooperative.

Speaking of which 🙂 …

Orders for August foodbag open now!

This July month we are having about the same number of bag order as in June. From August onward then, we are hoping to welcome the food bag orders of as many of you as possible:) be it as a member, as a try out member becoming member, or also of course of any new try-out members you believe would be interested to join! We are hoping to come to some 80-100 foodbag orders – this will be necessary for our coop to come to sustainability level to be able to continue its operations. We are at a critical point in this, thank you all for taking this to heart.

In the below a few upcoming Oma Maa dates

You will note that on the talkoot form, you are also able to engage in a variety to Oma Maa promotional activities. You would be most welcome to engage also in that way in taking our coop forward!

Diversity

A little political end-note:) One beautiful feature of the working on the farm, is certainly also the societal and political discussions we have been having over morning coffee or lunch concerning, well, you name it:) but often of course regarding that what we are engaged in. Lifting here a particular issue we discussed during one of those moments : whilst putting a focus on the combatting of climate change is ofcourse an important issue, there is actually an even more core pressing reason in light of future life to farm and eat organic, namely the saving of our nature’s diversity. This is also what Oma Maa kumppanuusmaatalous is about!
